Revolutionizing Office Comfort: The Cushion Table

Designed by Donghong Seo, this innovative table aims to alleviate wrist strain for office workers

In a world where office work dominates, the need for ergonomic furniture is more pressing than ever. Enter the Cushion Table, a unique design by Donghong Seo of Kunkuk University, aimed at reducing the wrist pain commonly associated with prolonged computer use. This design won the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its innovative approach and professional execution.

The Cushion Table is a product of careful observation and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by modern office workers. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a condition caused by repetitive strain on the wrist from activities such as typing and mouse clicking, is a common ailment among this demographic. Seo's design seeks to address this issue by providing a more comfortable, ergonomic solution.

The table's unique properties lie in its combination of hard and soft materials. The table board, made of hard plastic, is wrapped in a soft cushion, providing a comfortable resting place for the wrists. This design element is not just functional but also aesthetically pleasing, adding a touch of softness to the otherwise rigid form of a typical office table.

Supporting the cushion-wrapped board are table legs made of stainless steel, inspired by the form of spider legs. This design choice is not just visually interesting, but also provides sturdy support for the table. The project, which started and finished in South Korea in 2016, was a collaborative effort between Seo and support designer Hyunho Hwang.

Creating the Cushion Table was not without its challenges. The most difficult aspect, according to Seo, was adjusting the cushion part of the table. The size and height of the cushion were crucial factors in ensuring the table's effectiveness in alleviating wrist strain. The design process involved extensive research, including studying ways to minimize contact with hard or sharp surfaces, particularly at the wrists and elbows.

The Cushion Table is a prime example of how design can address real-world problems. It's a testament to the power of observation, research, and creativity in creating solutions that not only look good but also improve quality of life. With its unique design and proven effectiveness, the Cushion Table is set to change the way we think about office furniture.
